Cheyenne Mountain Air Station
Cheyenne Mountain Air Station is located in an underground facility in Cheyenne Mountain just West of Colorado Springs. A short distance from NORAD and USNORTHCOM located at Peterson Air Force Base. This facility became operational in 1967 as the NORAD; North American Aerospace Defense Command combat operations center. Today it serves as NORAD and USNORTHCOM’s alternative command center. The NORAD mission is to “conduct aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning in the defense of North America.” The USNORTHCOM partners with NORAD to “conduct homeland defense, civil support and security cooperation to defend and secure the United States and its interests.” Although Cheyenne Mountain Air Station is underground and would be an intriguing station to visit although they do not allow any tours of the facility at this time.
